Oh, Christmas Tree Pillow

I’m a little late to the game in releasing this crochet Christmas pillow pattern (Christmas is only 3 days away! What?), but sometimes when life gets crazy you can only do what you can do! I know you all understand! I got the inspiration quite a while ago and was so excited about it that I whipped it up in 24 hours! But getting the pattern together was apparently much more complicated than actually making it! That’s good news for you reader! Ha! I’m just happy I’m getting it out before Christmas and don’t have to wait til next year to share it!

Origin of This Pattern

As Christmas approached this season I found myself looking around for some good Christmas pillows for my family room. After scouting out a few stores I couldn’t quite find anything that really fit what I was imagining. So, as usually happens when I can’t find exactly what I want, I starting asking myself if I could just make it! And so that’s how this pillow was birthed!

Bobbles seem to be everywhere this season, so it was probably inevitable that I got inspired to incorporate them somewhere soon! As soon as I started to brainstorm what I wanted to incorporate in my homemade pillow, bobbles were at the front of the list. They are such a fun and cute way to add a design to a piece, as well as give it some great texture. I have used color changes to create a specific shape in previous patterns (such as the Heart Showers Beanie), but this was my first time using a different texture stitch to do something similar. Since it was my first time using the stitch like this, I decided to go with the simplest Christmas design I could think of… a tree! I am very pleased with how it turned out!

The Yarn For This Pattern

For the pillow itself, I used two strands of Caron Simply Soft Party in Red Sparkle. You can’t see it very well in the photos, but it has a nice, tinsel-y shine to it that really enhances the festive vibe. Caron Simply Soft is one of my favorite yarns for it’s super soft texture and rich color options. The “Party” collection is extra fun for something that needs a little sparkle.  I liked pairing it with the more rustic fur edging.

For the edging I used Red Heart Fur in Mink. This was my first time using a fur yarn and, at least for an edging, it was quite easy to work with. What a fantastic way to add a quick and stylish edging to so many projects! I would definitely like to use it again. I went around my pillow edges two times to get enough fluff, but debated going around even one more time to really get a good thickness. It is super soft and luxurious!

Materials:

Gauge:

4 inch square (using 2 strands of worsted weight yarn together) = 8 dc x 5 rows

Stitches Used:
(sl st) Slip Stitch
(ch) Chain
(sc) Single Crochet
(dc) Double Crochet
(fdc) Foundation Double Crochet
(bo) Bobble Pattern

Notes:

Beginning chain of each round does not count as a stitch, unless otherwise noted.

I have a very tight stitch, so be sure to check gauge. If you crochet more loosely than me, you may need to go down a hook size, or even two.

This pattern is completed using two strands of worsted weight yarn, crocheted together.

How to Crochet the Bobble Stitch:

Note: photos show only 1 strand of yarn in use, as it’s easier to see the stitch, but in the pattern you will be using two strands together.

2. Repeat step 1, four more times in the same stitch. You should have 6 loops on your hook.
3. Yo and pull through all 6 loops on the hook. Yo and pull through loop to finish off stitch. Bobble will pop towards the back.
4. Turn project to see the bobble popping out.

Back of Pillow:

(All rows will be crocheted using 2 strands of worsted weight yarn together.)

Row 1: Fdc 29 (13 inches). If you prefer to do a starting chain in place of foundation stitches, then chain 31 and dc in the 3rd chain from the hook and in each chain across (29).

Row 2 – 22: Ch 2. Turn. Dc in same stitch and each st across. (29) Do not finish off.

Ch 1 and sc evenly around all edges. 29 stitches on each edge, 3 stitches in each corner (2 of these count as part of the 29 of one joining edge). Join. Don’t finish off. Finished panel should measure about 13” by 13”.

Sewing the sides together:

Put sides together. Right sides should be facing out (in other words, you will not be turning the pillow case inside out later, so make sure the bobbles are facing outward now). Sc along 3 edges. 3 Sc in each corner. I put a red pillow case on my pillow before inserting it so that I would not see white through the stitches, but this is not required. Insert the pillow form in the case and then close up fourth edge with Sc. Join. Finish off and weave in ends.

Fur Edging:

Cut a length of red heart fur (in mink) that is about 120 inches long. Enough to go around the pillow twice with extra to spare. Using a yarn needle, gently insert into a corner stitch and pull through until middle of the strand is at the corner. You’ll leave the remaining half to go around the pillow the second time.

For now, weave the first half of the yarn length like a whip stitch through every third Sc around the edge of the pillow. Do it slightly loosely and fluff as you go so it is “furry.” When you get to the corner you started at, remove yarn from yarn needle and thread the needle on the end of the second half of the fur strand. Going in the opposite direction this time, weave the fur yarn in and out of the first strand of fur yarn, all around the pillow. Fluff as you go.

When you get back to the first corner again tie the two ends together and weave each end through a few stitches along opposite edges and cut off excess. If you want even more fluff, you can always add more rounds of the fur yarn.
