The Origin of This Pattern

It’s unique and handmade, but also quick and easy… and who doesn’t love a gift card! And, what could be better than a cozy that actually HOLDS the coffee shop gift card! A match made in heaven!

The Yarn

Since this item will be wrapped around a beverage and get lots of handling, I wanted to use a cotton yarn so that it would be easy to clean. For this one I chose I Love This Cotton from Hobby Lobby.  This was my first time using this yarn and I really enjoyed it. What I like the most about it is that it has a really nice sheen and softness, as far as cotton yarns go. It is also a thinner, more delicate size 4 cotton yarn , which really shows off the detail of a smaller stitch like a single crochet.

Materials:
Size 4 Yarn (I used I Love This Cotton in Burnt Sienna and Winter Sparkle)
US J/6.00 mm Crochet Hook
Yarn Needle
Scissors

Gauge:
1 “ = 4 sc and 5 rows

Sizing (Important!):
At this gauge, this cozy fit a tall (12 oz.) or grande (16 oz.) Starbucks disposable cup comfortably.

Finished size: About 8 ½“ diameter around the top edge (4 ¼ “ across the top edge when laid flat).

A note on sizing: It is important to pay attention to sizing in this project, since it is meant to fit a specific item. Several factors can affect the sizing: 1) thickness of your yarn, 2) your personal gauge (tension of your stitching) and 3) what size of cup you want your cozy to fit.
1) In regards to yarn thickness, the yarn I used for my cozy is a thinner size 4 100% cotton (I Love This Cotton). So, if you use a thicker yarn, your cozy may be a little larger.
2) In regards to gauge, my gauge tends to be tighter than most. So, if you have a more loose gauge than me, your cozy will again be larger.
3) In regards to the cup you want the cozy to fit, if you want it to fit a travel mug or large size coffee cup, you may want to make the cozy bigger.

To make the cozy larger, go up a hook size or two. If your cozy is coming out too big, go down a hook size or two. I found that changing my hook size gave me about a ½ inch difference per hook size.

Stitches Used:
(ch) chain
(sl st) slip stitch
(sc) single crochet
(sc2tog) single crochet two together
(dc) double crochet

Pattern Notes:

Beginning chain of each round does not count as a stitch.

Pattern:

Chain 30. (my chain was about 8 inches long, unstretched) Being careful not to twist the chain, join the last chain to the first chain with a slip stitch to create a circle.

Round 1: Chain 1. Sc in the same stitch and around. Join to the top of the first sc with a sl st. (30)

Rounds 2 – 5: Repeat Round 1. (30)

Note: At this point you want to check your sizing. Try it on the coffee cup you will be using, or measure the width at row 1. Mine was about 4 ¼ inches across the cozy when laid flat. If it is too large or too small, start again with a smaller or larger size hook.

Round 6: Ch 1. Sc in the same stitch and the next 12 stitches. Sc2tog. Sc in the next 13 stitches. Sc2tog. Join with a sl st to the top of the first sc. (28)

Round 7: Ch 1. Sc in the same stitch and around. Join to the top of the first sc with a sl st. (28)

Rounds 8 – 14: Repeat round 7. (28)

Round 15: Ch 1. Sc in the same stitch and the next 8 stitches. 2 sc in the next stitch. Sc in the next 8 stitches. 2 sc in the next stitch. Sc in the next 8 stitches. 2 sc in the next stitch. Join to the top of the first sc with a sl st. (31)

Round 16: Ch 1. Sc in the same stitch and the next 9 stitches. 2 sc in the next stitch. Sc in the next 9 stitches. 2 sc in the next stitch. Sc in the next 9 stitches. 2 sc in the next stitch. Join with a sl st to the top of the first sc. (34)

Round 17: Ch 1. Sc in the same stitch and around. Join with a sl st to the top of the first sc. (34)

Rounds 18-19: Repeat round 17. (34)

Round 20: Ch 1. Sc in the same stitch and the next 16 stitches. 2 sc in the next stitch. Sc in the next 16 stitches. Join with a sl st to the top of the first sc. (35)

Round 21: Ch 1. Sc in the same stitch and around. Join with a sl st to the top of the first sc. (35) Finish off and weave in end.

Note: At this point my cozy was about 4 ½ “ tall.

Round 22: Join your second color to the first stitch of the previous round. Ch 1. Sc in the same stitch and around. Join with a sl st to the top of the first sc. (35)

Round 23: Ch 1. Sc in the same stitch and around. Join with a sl st to the top of the first sc. (35)

Round 24: Ch 2. 3 dc in the same stitch. Skip 2 stitches. Sc in the next stitch. *Skip 2 stitches. 7 dc in the next stitch. Skip 2 stitches. Sc in the next stitch.* Repeat from * to * 4 more times (making a total of 5 ½ scallops so far). Skip the remaining stitches in the row and place 3 dc into the same stitch that you crocheted the first 3 dc of the row into (see photo below). It may feel a little awkward, but then you sl st into the top of the first dc of the row and it should look like all the other scallops. (total 6 scallops). Finish off and weave in ends.

Turn cozy inside-out, with scallops facing downward. Fold the scallop side up so that the crease is at about round 14 (see photos).
