Crochet Bow Pillow Pattern

Red crochet bow pillow propped in front of a basket and sitting on a white fluffy blanket.

Whether you’re going for cute or elegant, this crochet bow pillow pattern is just what you need to finish out your home decor! Not only is it a unique and artistic item to add to any room, it’s also soft and squishy! Chenille yarn is perfect for snuggling!

This bow pillow is easy to construct, using mostly one stitch! The linked double crochet stitch is perfect for a stuffed item like this one because the stitches are linked together, preventing any gaps where filling can peek through. Step by step photos are included to help you perfect this stitch.

Where to use your Crochet Bow Pillow

My original inspiration for designing this crochet bow pillow pattern was to fill a personal design need. It was Christmas and I needed something festive to put on the chairs on my front porch. A bow pillow seemed like a super cute idea.

However, like often happens in the holiday craziness, I did not get the design finished in time for Christmas! But I realized a bow pillow can be used for more than Christmas! Valentine’s Day is also a perfect opportunity for a pop of celebratory decor!

But even beyond holidays, this bow pillow would also be cute for a girl’s room or to top off a pile of bed pillows in a grown up room too. Have fun picking colors beyond red or pink if you’re decorating outside of the holidays!

The Yarn for this Pattern

I used Loops & Threads Petite Purl yarn for this pillow. It is a size 4, medium weight polyester yarn that would be described as “chenille.’ Chenille yarn is known for being soft and fluffy. It is perfect for creating soft, plush home decor items like pillows, blankets and stuffed animals.

Loops & Threads is specifically a Michael’s Stores yarn brand. However, many yarn brands carry their own version of a chenille yarn. Lion Brand Chenille Appeal is also a size 4 chenille yarn. Premier Yarns carries Pixie Dust, which is a chenille with a little added sparkle.

Many brands carry a “velvet” version of chenille yarn. It is just as cozy (maybe even more cozy), but be aware that it is much more sleek than basic chenille. The challenge with that extra sleekness it makes it more slippery and therefore more prone to loops slipping out of your stitches. It can still be used in a pinch, but just be aware that these slips can be annoying!

Abbreviation Key:

(ch) chain

(loyh) loops on your hook

How to Crochet the Linked Double Crochet (ldc)

Insert hook through the horizontal bar of the previous stitch (or through a loop of starting chain at the beginning of a row). Yo and pull through. You now have 2 loops on your hook. Insert hook into the next stitch. Yo and pull through. You now have 3 loops on your hook. Yo and pull through 2. You have 2 loops on your hook. Yo and pull through both loops. (For more detailed instructions and a video tutorial, see my Linked Double Crochet page. It includes a video tutorial.)

Pattern Notes:

I tend to crochet tightly. So be sure to check your gauge and if you are crocheting more loosely you can move to a smaller hook (or larger if you crochet even more tightly). Some people find they even need to go down two hook sizes to meet my gauge.

Photos are included in the instructions for key points that are the most difficult. There are not photos for every step, so be sure to read the instructions carefully and refer to the photos for additional assistance.

Pattern:

Side Panels (crochet 2):

Ch 35.

Row 1: Ldc in 3rd and 4th ch from hook. Ldc across. <32>

Row 2: Ch 3. Turn. Ldc in same st and each st across. <32>

Rows 3 – 35: Repeat Row 2.

Finish off and weave in ends.

At this point your panel should be approximately 15” x 8”

Repeat instructions for 2nd panel.

Center Tie:

Ch 13.

Row 1: Ldc in 3rd and 4th ch from hook. Ldc across. <10>

Row 2: Ch 3. Turn. Ldc in same st and each st across. <10>

Rows 3 – 23: Repeat Row 2.

Tie should measure approximately 11” x 2.25”

Fold in half, lengthwise. Sc the two long edges together to create a tube. Finish off and leave a long tail for construction later.

Construction:

Place two panels on top of each other. Position so long edges are horizontal. Attach yarn to upper right corner. Sl st the two panels together along the long edge (approx. 50 sts). Continue to sl st the short edge together (32 sts). Continue to sl st the second long edge together. Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing the last edge shut.

Turn work inside out. Stuff evenly with polyfil.

Use a yarn needle and the long tail to whip stitch most of the final edge shut. Before completely sewing shut, make any final adjustments to the polyfil. Sew the last few stitches and finish off.

Cut a long stretch of yarn and wrap it around the center of the pillow. Pull it tight and secure it with a knot. This will keep the pillow cinched at the middle better than the tie piece. The tie piece is mostly decorative.

Take the center tie piece. Flatten it so that the seam is at the very back and wrap it around the center of the pillow, with the ends towards the back of the pillow. Using the long tail and yarn needle, sew the two ends of tie together with a whip stitch.

Weave in any remaining ends.
