Yarn Needle
Scissors

Gauge:

Each square is approximately 2.75” x 2.75”

Finished Size:

3.25” x 3.25”

Abbreviation Key:

(ch) chain
(sl st) slip stitch
(sk) skip
(sc) single crochet
(st) stitch
(fsc) foundation single crochet
(dc) double crochet
(tr) treble crochet

Pattern Notes:

Gauge is not terribly important for this pattern, but just for reference I tend to crochet tightly. If you feel you are crocheting more loosely you can move to a smaller hook (or larger if you crochet even more tightly). Some people find they even need to go down two hook sizes to meet my gauge.

Chain at start of each round does count as a stitch.

There are several steps when you are instructed to crochet a foundation single crochet. If you struggle with this stitch, you can always use the starting chain method instead. Chain a number that is one more than instructed for the foundation single crochet. Then single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across.

Pattern:

Sides of Present:

Using your main color, ch 5. Join with sl st to first ch to make a circle.

Alternative: use the magic ring method

The next round you will be crocheting into the starting circle or magic ring. If you used the chain method, crochet around your tail so that you can use the tail to cinch the center of the circle tight.

Round 1: Ch 2 (counts as stitch). In the circle, place: 1 dc, tr, 3 dc, tr, 3 dc, tr, 3 dc, tr, dc. Join with sl st to starting ch. <16> Pull tail to cinch the center of the circle tight.

Round 2: Ch 2. (Counts as stitch). Dc in next st. In tr, place (2 dc, tr, 2dc). *place 1 dc in each of next 3 st. In the tr, place (2 dc, tr, 2 dc).* Repeat from * to *, two more times. Dc in last st. Join to starting chain with sl st. <32>

Finish off and weave in your ends.

Repeat instructions for a second square.

Place both squares on top of each other with right sides out. Starting at one corner, insert your hook through the corner loops of both squares and pull through a loop of yarn. Ch 1. Sc down the first edge of the squares, crocheting both squares together as you go (8 sc). Place 4 sc in the corner. Continue to sc down the next side (6 sc). Place 4 sc in the next corner. Sc down the third side (8 sc). Finish off and weave in your ends. Leave the 4th side open for the gift card pocket. <30>

Ribbon:

Using the ribbon color, fsc until your row is 6” long (about 22 fsc). Finish off, but do not trim tails. Align one end of ribbon at the center of the top of the present, where the opening is. Using the tail and a yarn needle, attach the end of the “ribbon” to the top row of the present. Wrap the ribbon down over the bottom edge of the present and back up the back of the present, so that the other end of the ribbon aligns with the top row of the present on the back side (opposite where it is attached on the front). Using the other tail and yarn needle, attach the ribbon on the back side. Weave in your ends.

Fsc a second ribbon, the same length. Finish off but leave the tails. Wrap the ribbon horizontally around the center of the present, overlapping the other ribbon. Where the two ends of the ribbon meet on one side, use a tail and yarn needle to secure the ribbon to the edge of the present. Weave in your ends.

Fsc a third ribbon, about 8” long (30 sc). You can adjust the length depending on how long you want the ribbon tails to be. Finish off and weave in ends. Create a bow shape with the ribbon. Using a short strand of the same color yarn, secure the bow by wrapping the yarn around the middle a few times. Secure with a knot. Using a yarn needle and the yarn tails, sew the ribbon to the top center of the present. Tie a knot and weave in your ends.
