Scallops are on trend

Scallops are not new! They’ve been around for a long time, coming in and out of style through the years. Right now they seem to be making a little come back, especially in the home decor area. I’ve been seeing them on baskets, trays, mirrors and bags.

Sometimes a scallop style can also be described with other terms. You may see them called “fans” or “shells.” In particular, when creating a scallop in crochet, you are actually using a “shell stitch” to create the scallop itself.

Scallops, fans or shells are most commonly used as a border, but occasionally they can be added as an accent to an inner layer of an item. Kind of similar to adding a ruffle.

If you love a good decorative edge, you might also like these crochet patterns that feature fringe!
