Star Stitch Wash Cloth | Free Crochet Pattern

Close up of star stitch wash cloth in light blue and on a basket.

The star stitch is one of the most beautiful crochet stitches and it really makes the star stitch wash cloth an extra special piece!

The star stitch is more of an intermediate skill and this wash cloth is definitely an intermediate project. For that reason I’ve included a video tutorial for this piece in addition to the written instructions. If you run into any trouble, be sure to check that out!

Materials:

Gauge:

After 4 rounds work is approximately 4” across

Finished Size:

8.5” x 8.5”

Abbreviation Key:

(ch) chain
(sl st) slip stitch
(sc) single crochet
(rsc) reverse single crochet
Special Stitch: Star Stitch (instructions included within the pattern)
** Repeat instructions between asterisks as many times as directed

Pattern Notes:

I tend to crochet tightly. So be sure to check your gauge and if you are crocheting more loosely you can move to a smaller hook (or larger if you crochet even more tightly). Some people find they even need to go down two hook sizes to meet my gauge.

Photos are included in the instructions for key points that are the most difficult. There are not photos for every step, so be sure to read the instructions carefully and refer to the photos for additional assistance when referenced in the written instructions.

Note: in Round 3 you begin working into both star stitches and dc stitches. A star stitch counts as 2 stitches. The top loops of the star stitch count as one stitch. The eye of the star stitch (loop created by the final chain 1 of the star stitch) counts as a second stitch. These are the two spaces you crochet into when working into the star stitch.

Round 3: Ch 2. 2 dc in same st. *Using last dc and next 2 st, complete a star stitch (see illustration 4 for stitch placement). Complete 2 more star stitches across next 4 sts (see illustration 5 for where to place hook when working subsequent star stitches). In same stitch that the last star stitch ended in, place 4 dc (see illustration 6 for placement).* Repeat from * to * 2 more times. Using last dc and next 2 st, complete a star stitch. Complete 1 more star stitch. For the final star st of the round, complete as the previous, but for the last insert of your hook, insert through the joining sl st of the last round (see illustration 7 for placement). Place 2 dc in the same st as first 2 dc of the round. Join with a sl st to first dc of the round. <12 star stitches – 3 on each edge, 16 dc-4 in each corner>
