Crochet Flower Pot Holder Pattern

This crochet flower pot holder is an adorable addition to any kitchen! It’s fun in any combo of colors, whether solid or variegated!
The double-sided construction makes it super safe as either a hot pad on the counter or a pot holder when you’re removing items out of the oven. No worrying about the heat sneaking through a hole since you have a whole second layer on the other side!

My recommendation for most kitchen items, but especially pot holders, is to use 100% cotton yarn! Cotton is highly durable, easy to wash and dry, and is heat tolerant.
You’re sure to get your pot holders dirty and grimy since they’re going to be used for grabbing and moving hot dishes of food. But it’s no problem with 100% cotton yarn. You can just toss your items right in the washer and dryer with the rest of your laundry!
And though some yarn fibers might melt or get cinged when coming into contact with a pan right out of the oven, 100% cotton yarn will not. It handles heat very well.

(tr) treble stitch
** Repeat instructions between asterisks as many times as directed
Pattern Notes:
I tend to crochet tightly. So be sure to check your gauge and if you are crocheting more loosely you can move to a smaller hook (or larger if you crochet even more tightly). Some people find they even need to go down two hook sizes to meet my gauge.
Photos are included in the instructions for key points that are the most difficult. There are not photos for every step, so be sure to read the instructions carefully and refer to the photos for additional assistance.
Text on photos is a repeat of text in the pattern, not a part of the pattern. The text is just added so you know which part of the instructions the photo is for.
As you work up the two circles for each side of the pot holder, there may be some curling and waving. As long as it is not very pronounced, it should flatten out when you sew the two sides together.
Beginning chain of a round does not count as a stitch unless specified.
Video Tutorial:
Written Pattern:
Begin using your main color.
Round 1: Ch 2. 7 hdc in 2nd ch from hook. <7>

Do not join. You will be crocheting in a continuous spiral. Your next stitch should be placed directly into the first stitch of the previous round. Use a stitch marker to keep track of the first or last stitch of each round as you go.

Round 2: 2 hdc in each st around. <14>

Round 3: *Hdc in next st. 2 hdc in next st.* Repeat from * to * around. <21>
Round 4: *Hdc in each of next 2 sts. 2 hdc in next st.* Repeat from * to * around. <28>
Round 5: *Hdc in each of next 3 sts. 2 hdc in next st.* Repeat from * to * around. <35>
Note: at this point your work should be approximately 3.75” across.

Round 6: *Hdc in each of next 4 sts. 2 hdc in next st.* Repeat from * to * around. <42>
Round 7: *Hdc in each of next 5 sts. 2 hdc in next st.* Repeat from * to * around. <49>
Round 8: *Hdc in each of next 6 sts. 2 hdc in next st.* Repeat from * to * around. <56>
Round 9: *Hdc in each of next 7 sts. 2 hdc in next st.* Repeat from * to * around. <63>
Round 10: *Hdc in each of next 8 sts. 2 hdc in next st.* Repeat from * to * around. <70>
Round 11: *Hdc in each of next 9 sts. 2 hdc in next st.* Repeat from * to * around. <77>
Round 12: *Hdc in each of next 10 sts. 2 hdc in next st.* Repeat from * to * around. Sc in next st. Sl st in next st. <84>
Note: Circle is about 8.5” across.
Finish off. Weave in ends.
Repeat instructions from beginning to create a second circle.
Joining the two sides and creating the petals:
Place both circles together with right sides facing out. Attach your second color through aligned loops of outer round of stitches. Ch 1. Sc the two circles together, stitching through both loops of half double crochet stitches of each circle. Join with sl st to the first sc of the round. <84>

Note: as you make your petals in the next step, be sure to keep the first treble stitch of each petal nice and tight. This will help with petal shape.
Ch 3 (counts as tr st) 3 tr in same st. Sk 2 sts. Sl st in next st.

*Sk 2 sts. 7 tr in next st. Sk 2 sts. Sl st in next st.* Repeat from * to * around until last 2 sts. Sk last 2 sts. 3 tr in same st as first tr of round.

Join with sl st to starting ch 3. <14 petals>
