Make it Double Sided!

I almost always make my crochet hot pads double sided (unless I’m using the super thick Thermal Stitch!). Since crochet fabric naturally has gaps and holes, I am always nervous about getting burned. I like to double up on the layers just in case.
If you like this double sided hot pad, you might also like my Pumpkin Hot Pad pattern, simple Circle Hot Pad, Square Hot Pad, Checkered Hot Pad and Flower Hot Pad.

Why I always use 100% cotton yarn for my hot pads
Different yarn fibers have different characteristics, making them best suited for certain projects. Cotton fiber is especially good at handling heat. Whereas other yarn fibers might melt or catch fire when coming into contact with high heat, cotton will be much more resilient.
Besides being heat tolerant, cotton is also tough. It holds up really well, even after being tossed around the kitchen every day and then thrown in the wash and dryer with all the other laundry.
For this particular hot pad I chose to use Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Cotton. I love it for it’s softness, but that’s not my top priority for a hot pad. What I especially love it for for this project is the wide variety of color choices. I was able to find just the right orange color I was hoping for!

Materials:
• For main color: 115 Yards I Love This Cotton weight 4 medium (100% cotton, 3.5oz/100g, 180yd/165m) I used color Orange
• For accents: 23 Yards I Love This Cotton weight 4 medium (100% cotton, 3.5oz/100g, 180yd/165m) I used color Ivory
• US I/ 5.5 mm Crochet Hook (or size needed to obtain gauge)
• Yarn Needle
• Scissors
• Stitch Marker
Gauge:
Gauge isn’t terribly important for this pattern, but for reference, after 6 rounds my circle was approximately 4.5” across.
Finished Size:
Approximately 9” across.
Abbreviation Key:
(ch) chain
(sl st) slip stitch
(sc) single crochet
(hdc) half double crochet
special skill: crocheting in the third loop
optional special skill: Surface Crochet (photo tutorial)
** Repeat instructions between asterisks as many times as directed
Pattern Notes:
I tend to crochet tightly. If you feel you are crocheting more loosely you can move to a smaller hook (or larger if you crochet even more tightly). Some people find they even need to go down two hook sizes to meet my gauge.
Pattern:
Side 1 (this will be the side of the potholder with the white accents, so start with the accent color and move to main color when directed)
Round 1: Ch 2. Place 8 hdc in second chain from hook. Join with sl st to first hdc. <8>
Note: You can use the beginning tail of your work to cinch the hole in the center of the round tight. If you crocheted over the tail on round 1 you can just pull it. If not, then you can use a yarn needle to slip the tail through the bottom of the first round of stitches and then pull it to cinch tight.
Alternative method: If you prefer, you may start with the magic ring method rather than the chain 2. Place 8 hdc in the magic ring. Continue as instructed.
Change color to main color. Finish off accent color.
Round 2: Place 2 hdc in each stitch around. Do not join. <16>
Instead of joining at the end of the round, you will crochet in a continuous spiral by placing the first stitch of the next round directly into the first stitch of the previous round. Be sure to use a stitch marker on the last stitch of each round so that you keep track of which round you are on.
Round 3: *2 hdc in next stitch. 1 hdc in the next.* Repeat from * to * around. <24>
Round 4: *2 hdc in next stitch. 1 hdc in each of next 2 stitches.* Repeat from * to * around. <32>
Round 5: *2 hdc in next stitch. 1 hdc in each of next 3 stitches.* Repeat from * to * around. <40>
Round 6: *2 hdc in next stitch. 1 hdc in each of next 4 stitches.* Repeat from * to * around. <48>
Note: Gauge is not terribly important for this pattern, but if you would like to compare to my gauge this is a good point to measure. My circle was 4.5” across (diameter) after round 6.
Round 7: *2 hdc in next stitch. 1 hdc in each of next 5 stitches.* Repeat from * to * around. <56>
Round 8: *2 hdc in next stitch. 1 hdc in each of next 6 stitches.* Repeat from * to * around. <64>
Round 9: *2 hdc in next stitch. 1 hdc in each of next 7 stitches.* Repeat from * to * around. <72>
Round 10: *2 hdc in next stitch. 1 hdc in each of next 8 stitches.* Repeat from * to * around. <80>
Round 11: *2 hdc in next stitch. 1 hdc in each of next 9 stitches.* Repeat from * to * around. Sc in next st. Sl st in next st. <88>
Change to accent color. Finish off main color. You will no longer be working in a continuous spiral from this point on.
Round 12: Join accent color anywhere on the last round. Ch 1. 2 hdc in same stitch. 1 hdc in each of next 10 stitches. *2 hdc in next stitch. 1 hdc in each of next 10 stitches.* Repeat from * to * around. Join with sl st to first hdc. <96>
Change to main color. Finish off accent color.
Round 13: (crochet all stitches in this row in the third loop only) Ch 1. 2 sc in same stitch. 1 sc in each of next 11 stitches. *2 sc in next stitch. 1 sc in each of next 11 stitches*. Repeat from * to * around. Join with sl st to first sc. Sl st to next st. <104>
Finish off and weave in ends.
Optional surface crochet lines:

Using the accent color yarn, surface crochet a line from edge of the first round to round 12 (which is the accent color). Try to align your lines with the faint “bumps” on the outer row that is created by the increase stitches on the last round. This will just help you keep them even. Do this 8 times, 1 for each “bump”. Take a look at my Surface Crochet Tutorial if you’ve never done it before.
Tip: If you find it hard to keep your lines straight, you can use dressmakers chalk and a ruler to draw lines to follow.
Finish off and weave in ends. You can make knots at the back after finishing off if it helps keep your lines secure.
Side 2 (This side will be crocheted only using the main color)
Round 1: Ch 2. Place 8 hdc in second ch from hook. <8>
Alternative method: If you prefer, you may start with the magic ring method rather than the chain 2. Place 8 hdc in the magic ring. Continue as instructed.
Instead of joining at the end of the round, you will crochet in a continuous spiral by placing the first stitch of the next round directly into the first stitch of the previous round. Be sure to use a stitch marker on the last stitch of each round so that you keep track of which round you are on.
Round 2: Place 2 hdc in each stitch around. <16>
Round 12: *2 hdc in next stitch. 1 hdc in each of next 10 stitches.* Repeat from * to * around. <96>
Round 13: *2 sc in next stitch. 1 sc in each of next 11 stitches. Repeat from * to * around. <104>
Finish off and weave in ends.

Sewing the 2 sides together:
Line both sides up together, right sides facing out. Using main color yarn, sl st both sides together by placing one sl st in each st of the last round on each side. Sl st to the first sl st to finish the round.

Finish off and weave in ends.
