Crochet Patterns Scarves

Michelle Scarf | Simple Crochet Scarf Pattern

This simple crochet scarf pattern has such a fun raised texture! The alternating bean stitch clusters look like little shells scattered about! It is feminine and unique, but still easy enough for beginners.

The pattern is a simple 4 row repeat that incorporates only a few basic stitches! Once you get the repeat down, you can just keep going until the scarf is as long as you like.

Light pink crochet scarf with fringe, lying on a white tile back ground. The edge of a basket and a few leaves can be seen on the upper left corner. White script says "Michelle Scarf: Free Crochet Pattern"

This pattern is especially beautiful in a nice solid color. The raised texture and nicely aligned stitch pattern is easier to see that way.

The Origin of This Scarf Pattern

I recently completed a pattern set that used the bean stitch in a ‘v’ stitch pattern. While I was working on that I wondered what it would look like to use 3 bean stitches in one stitch, as opposed to 2 in the ‘v’ formation. I experimented with it and, as you can see, I liked it.

A pink crochet scarf lays crumpled in tumbling layers on a white tile backdrop. A basket and some leaves sit in the blurred background. The lighting from behind enhances the raised texture of the scarf.

I even liked it enough to play around with spacing and adding a row between the bean stitch rows in order to keep the best side of the bean stitches all on one side of the project, etc. It took some figuring, but it turned out great!

In the end, it turned out to be a simple 4 row repeat to get the pattern I liked, so I am pleased with how easy the project is to complete. If you are a beginner, once you get a few stitches down – the bean and the basic single, half double and double crochet – you should be all set to go!

The Yarn For This Pattern

I used the same yarn for this pattern that I did in my recent Blooming Trails Hat and Cowl. Yarn Bee Yarn ID has a soft bounce that I really like for a raised stitch like the bean stitch. It gives it wonderful definition, while also being very soft and squishy!

Any size 4 yarn will work for this pattern, but I would suggest looking for one that has good density and “bounce”. The more sleek and shiny yarns that kind of lie flat because they are so smooth will not have as much stitch definition. The bean stitches will not puff out as much.

THE PATTERN

Pattern:

Materials:

  • 328 Yards Size 4 Yarn (I used Yarn Bee Yarn ID in Soft Shell)
  • US J / 6 mm Crochet Hook
  • Yarn Needle
  • Scissors

Gauge:

Gauge is not terribly important for this pattern since it is not a fitted item. See notes.

Sizing:

8 ¾” wide and 74” long (not including fringe)
Length can be adjusted to your preference

Stitches Used:

(ch) chain
(sl st) slip stitch
(fsc) foundation single crochet
(sc) single crochet
(hdc) half double crochet
(dc) double crochet
Special stitch: Bean Stitch

How to Crochet the Bean Stitch:

Insert hook. Yo and pull through the stitch. Yo. Insert hook in the same stitch. Yo and pull up a loop. You will have 4 loops on your hook. Yo. Insert hook in the same stitch. Yo and pull up a loop. You will have 6 loops on your hook. Yo and pull through all 6 loops on your hook. Chain 1 to finish off the stitch.

Pattern Notes:

Beginning chain of each row does not count as a stitch.

Gauge is not terribly important for this pattern since it is not a fitted item. However, you can adjust your hook size to achieve the drape you prefer or to meet the general measurements of the pattern. Just as a reference, I tend to crochet tightly. Some people find they even need to go down two hook sizes to meet my gauge.

For reference, after 6 rows of the pattern, my scarf was 3” from top to bottom and 8 ¾” across the row.

There will be a “prettier” or “right” side to the project, as the bean stitches pop out more on one side than the other.

Written Pattern:

Row 1: Fsc 23. (multiple of 3 + 2. However, if you are changing the size, add or remove in multiples of 6 to achieve balance of bean stitch sections)

If you prefer not to use a foundation stitch, you can chain 24. Sc in the 2nd chain from the hook and in each chain across. (23)

Row 2. Ch 2. Turn. Dc in the same stitch. Dc in each of the next 3 stitches. *Skip the next stitch. Place 3 bean stitches in the next stitch. Skip the next stitch. Dc in each of the next 3 stitches.* Repeat from * to * across. Dc in the final stitch. (23 stitches; 14 dc and 3 bean stitch clusters)

Row 3: Ch 2. Turn. Dc in the same stitch and in each of the next 3 stitches. *Hdc in the eye of the first bean stitch. Sc in the eye of the second bean stitch. Hdc in the eye of the 3rd bean stitch. Dc in each of the next 3 stitches.* Repeat from * to * across. Dc in the last stitch. (23).

Row 4: Ch 2. Turn. Dc in the same stitch. Skip the next stitch. Place 3 bean stitches in the next stitch. Skip the next stitch. *Dc in each of the next 3 stitches. Skip the next stitch. Place 3 bean stitches in the next stitch. Skip the next stitch.* Repeat from * to * across. Dc in the final stitch. (23 stitches; 11 dc and 4 bean stitch clusters)

Row 5: Ch 2. Turn. Dc in the same stitch. Hdc in the eye of the first bean stitch. Sc in the eye of the second bean stitch. Hdc in the eye of the third bean stitch. *Dc in each of the next 3 stitches. Hdc in the eye of the first bean stitch. Sc in the eye of the second bean stitch. Hdc in the eye of the third bean stitch.* Repeat from * to * across. Dc in the last stitch. (23)

Repeat rows 2 – 5 until you complete your preferred length for your scarf. I prefer a really long scarf, so I completed 141 rows to reach a length of approximately 74 inches (not including fringe)

Finish off and weave in your ends.

Optional: Add fringe.
