More Textured Crochet Patterns
If you love the look of the bar stitch in this pattern, I have several other patterns that use the same stitch design.
The Coconut Cakes Bag uses the straight lines to enhance the fun design of a trifold bag! It’s worked up in one big rectangle (making it super easy to crochet) and then folded up and sewn together for this cute and practical over the shoulder bag!
The Bar Stitch Beanie and matching Bar Stitch Scarf take the long lines into the realm of fashion. This set is easy to work up and looks so good in a beautiful solid color yarn!

Materials:
• 46 Yards I Love This Cotton yarn weight 4 medium (100% cotton, 3.5oz/100g, 180yd/165m) I used color French Lilac
• US I/ 5.5 mm Crochet Hook (or size needed to obtain gauge)
• Yarn Needle
• Scissors
Gauge:
Gauge isn’t terribly important for this pattern and the finished project is just slightly larger than a gauge swatch so it seems unnecessary to crochet a swatch. If you feel your stitches are too tight or loose, or your width is not close to 6.25” across as you get through a few rows, you can start again with a different size hook.
Finished Size:
6.4” x 6.6” (approximately 6.5” x 6.5”)
Abbreviation & Symbol Key:
(ch) chain
(sl st) slip stitch
(sk) skip
(sc) single crochet
(st) stitch
(fsc) foundation single crochet
Special Stitch: (fpdc) front post double crochet
** Repeat instructions between asterisks as many times as directed
How to Crochet the Front Post Double Crochet:
Yarn over. Insert hook, from front to back to front, around the post of stitch specified in pattern. Yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through two loops. Yarn over and pull through two remaining loops.
Pattern Notes:
I tend to crochet tightly. If you feel you are crocheting more loosely you can move to a smaller hook (or larger if you crochet even more tightly). Some people find they even need to go down two hook sizes to meet my gauge.
Photos are included in the instructions for key points that are the most difficult. There are not photos for every step, so be sure to read the instructions carefully and refer to the photos for additional assistance when applicable.
Chain at the start of each row does not count as a stitch.
Pattern is a multiple of 3 plus 2 when using foundation single crochet for first row. It is multiple of 3 plus 3 when using starting chain method.
Pattern:
Row 1: Fsc 23.
Note: If you prefer to use a starting chain method, ch 24. Sc in 2nd chain from hook and in each ch across. <23>
Row 2: Ch 1. Turn. Sc across. <23>
Row 3: Ch 1. Turn. *Sc in next 2 st. Fpdc in sc two rows down. Sk sc behind fpdc.* Repeat from * to * until the last 2 st. Sc in last 2 st. <23>
Row 4: Repeat Row 2.
Row 5: Ch 1. Turn. *Sc in next 2 st. Fpdc in fpdc two rows down. Sk sc behind fpdc.* Repeat from * to * until the last 2 st. Sc in last 2 st. <23>
Rows 6 – 28: Repeat rows 4 and 5 until work is approximately 6.25” tall. Do not finish off.
Border:
Ch 1. Turn. Sl st in each st across the starting row <23>. Ch 1. Sl st down the side, placing 1 sl st at the end of each row <28>. Note: I inserted my hook through only one loop at the end of each row. Ch 1 at the corner. Sl st in each st across the starting row <23>. Ch 1. Sl st up the other side in the same manner as the opposite side, placing 1 sl st at the end of each row <28>. Sl st to the starting ch 1. Finish off and weave in ends.
If the dish cloth curls and it bothers you, blocking can be used to flatten and relax the stitches.
