Bar Stitch Beanie | FREE CROCHET PATTERN

The Bar Stitch Beanie uses the front post double crochet stitch to create a striped texture without ever needing to make a color change! It’s a simple repeat that creates such a nice, neat design.
If you like stripes as much as me, but aren’t a fan of color changing, this project is for you! You’ll also want to take a look at the matching scarf pattern!

Because I’m a fan of a good matching scarf and hat set, of course I made this beanie to match the Bar Stitch Scarf that I already posted on the blog!
And if you love a beanie with wonderfully textured lines, you might love these beanies as well: the Braided Beanie, Blooming Ridges Beanie and Peek-A-Boo Beanie!

How to Crochet the Front Post Double Crochet
Yarn over. Insert hook, from front to back to front, around the post of stitch specified in pattern. Yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through two loops. Yarn over and pull through two remaining loops.
Pattern Notes:
I tend to crochet tightly. If you feel you are crocheting more loosely you can move to a smaller hook (or larger if you crochet even more tightly). Some people find they even need to go down two hook sizes to meet my gauge.
Chain at start of each round does not count as a stitch.
Pattern is a multiple of 3. If resizing, simply make sure the number of rows in your band is a multiple of 3.
I used a larger size hook than recommended for this yarn so that I could obtain a softer drape. You can adjust your hook size to get your preferred fabric density.
Pattern:
Band:
Row 1: Ch 9. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. <8>
Rows 2-69: Ch 1. Turn. Sc in same st. Sc blo in each of next 6 sts. Sc in final st. <8>
Note: my band was approximately 18” long at this point. This will be the circumference of your hat band. If you need to resize, you just need to be sure your number of rows is a multiple of 3.
Line up the short ends of the band and sc them together. Turn the band inside out to hide the join. If you have never crocheted a band together, and aren’t sure how to do it, here is a Youtube tutorial to help you out.

Body:
Round 1: Ch 1. Place 1 sc in the end of each row of the band. Join with a sl st to the first sc of the round. <69>
Round 2: Ch 1. Sc in same st and in each st around. Join with a sl st to the first sc of the round. <69>
Round 3: Ch 1. *Sc in same st and next st. Fpdc in sc two rows down. Sk sc behind fpdc.* Repeat from * to * around. Join with sl st to first sc of round. <69>
Round 4: Ch 1. Sc in same st and in each st around. Join with sl st to the first sc of round. <69>
Round 5: Ch 1. *Sc in same st and next st. Fpdc in fpdc two rows down. Sk sc behind fpdc.* Repeat from * to * around. Join with sl st to first sc of round. <69>
Rounds 6 – 26: Repeat rounds 4 and 5, ending on a repeat of round 4, or until you have reached the desired height for your hat. My hat was approximately 9” tall at this point. (it was 8.5” after cinching)
Finish off and leave a long tail. Using the tail and a yarn needle, weave the tail in and out along the top of the final round. Pull to cinch the beanie shut. Tie a knot to secure and weave in ends.

Add a pom pom if desired.
