Crochet Patterns Hats

Valentine Hygge Hat

This valentine hat pattern is super thick and warm, as it alternates size 5 yarn with size 4 double stranded. It is perfect for a really cold winter day! Good thing Valentine’s Day is still chilly in many parts of the world. This combo of pink and cozy will make the perfect match!

An occasional bead stitch added throughout the pattern creates just the right amount of texture. It is a fun new stitch to try too (if you haven’t already)!

The Origin of This Pattern

This valentine hat pattern came about from a combined search for new yarn and new stitches. I’ll talk more about the hunt for the perfect yarn below, but the pattern evolved from playing with this fabulous book: The Crochet Stitch Dictionary! (this is an affiliate link)

My hubby got me this book for Christmas and I have had such a fun time pouring over the pages!! I can hardly wait to try everything! It was hard to pick what to do first, but I finally landed on the bean stitch!

The bean stitch is a really fun stitch and creates great texture! I hope you enjoy learning it if it is new to you as well!

The Yarn For This Pattern

As I was perusing the aisles of yarn in Joann’s for upcoming projects, one of my goals was to find something that would be a good fit for Valentine’s Day. I spotted this Caron Simply Soft Speckled, which I don’t recall seeing before! I thought it might look really pretty paired with a solid tone.

There were a few colors that could work (a pretty purple and a light pink), but I went for this pink and red, called “lipstick.”

Next, I needed something to match. More perusing ensued as I walked through all the aisles of Joann’s, holding up that Caron Simply Soft skein next to every pink and red I could find. It was not an easy tone to match it turned out! But I finally landed on Red Heart Hygge in Powder.

It was not my intention to match a size 4 yarn with a size 5, but I thought I’d just give it a shot and see how it went. Besides the color being a good match, I also really liked the idea of the hygge rows being soooo soft! My first attempt looked kind of funky (as one might expect), with the hygge rows popping out a little more than I would like. Lots of frogging happened.

Finally, I decided to try crocheting two strands of the Caron Simply Soft together to see if it matched well enough in size to the hygge. I thought it worked well. The Caron rows have a little tighter feel/ drape than the hygge, but the sizing of the rows was a much better match.

Materials:

~ Size 4 yarn, 155 yards (I used Caron Simply Soft Speckle in Lipstick, not including pom)
~ Size 5 yarn, 45 yards (I used Red Heart Hygge in Powder)
~ US J / 6.0 mm crochet hook
~ Yarn Needle
~ Scissors

Gauge:

The easiest way to measure gauge for this pattern is to measure the band as you go.
~ After 11 rows of the band, my band was 4” long and 1 ¾” wide.
~ After 60 rows (completed band), my band was 19 ½” long and 1 ¾” wide.

Final Measurements:

Band: 19 ½”
Height: 8”

Sizing:

This pattern makes a size adult small/ teen at this gauge. Notes on adjusting to a different size can be found in the pattern, after row 2 of the band.

Stitches & Abbreviations Used:
(ch) chain
(sl st) slip stitch
(sc) single crochet
(dc) double crochet
(sc2tog) single crochet two together
(dc2tog) double crochet two together
(sk) skip
(st) stitch

Pattern Notes:

I tend to crochet tightly. So be sure to check your gauge as you crochet the band and if you are crocheting more loosely you can move to a smaller hook (or larger if you crochet even more tightly). See measurements to compare under “gauge” above. Some people find they even need to go down two hook sizes to meet my gauge.

There are color changes every few rounds. You can choose to completely finish off with each round, or drop the finished yarn and pick it up again when it is needed, since you will always be changing color at the end of a round.

Ch 1 or ch 2 at the beginning of the row or round does not count as a stitch.

In order to match the size 4 yarn with the size 5 yarn, all crocheting with the size 4 yarn will be done with two strands together.

The bead stitch incorporates a dc as the first step (see instructions below). All directions that instruct you to complete a bead stitch will intend for you to begin the bead stitch with a new dc. In other words, if you have just completed a dc prior to the bean stitch, do not use this dc as part of your bead stitch. Start your bead stitch with a NEW dc.

How to Crochet the Bead Stitch:

Dc. *Yo. Insert the hook around the post of the dc (insert from the front right of the post and move towards the back left of the post). Yo and pull through a loop*. Repeat from * to * 2 more times. You should have 7 loops on your hook. Yo and pull through 6 loops on your hook. Yo and pull through remaining 2 loops on your hook.

Pattern:

Band: (w/ 2 strands of size 4 yarn together)

Ch 7.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd chain from hook and in each stitch across. (6)

Row 2: Ch 1. Turn. Sc in the same stitch and in each across. (6)

Rows 3 – 60: Repeat row 2.

Note on sizing and gauge: At this point my band was 19 ½” long and 1 ¾” wide – This is a size small adult or teen. There is little stretch with this stitch, so you really want to make sure it is the size you want at this point. If your gauge is very different, you may want to start over with a smaller or larger hook to accommodate.

If you want to adjust to a larger or smaller size band completely, you just need to add or remove a multiple of 6 rows.

Sc ends together.

Turn inside out so that the seam will be on the inside.

Note: As stated, a band constructed in this manner does not provide a lot of stretch. I chose this style because I personally liked the flat visual for this hat. However, if you would like more stretch, you can follow the same directions, but crochet into the back loop only on all rows beginning with row 2. Just be aware that this will give it a more ridged look and may affect the sizing.

Body:

Round 1 (continuing with 2 strands of size 4 yarn): Ch 1. Sl st around the hat, one sl st in the end of each row. Join with sl st to first sl st (60) At last yo of the join, drop size 4 yarn and pick up size 5 yarn. Finish off previous yarn if desired (or drop and pick up again at next color change).

Round 2 (with size 5 yarn): Ch 1. (In back loop only for this row) Sc in the same st and each stitch around. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (60)

Round 3: Ch 2. Dc in the same st. Dc in each of the next 3 stitches. Bead stitch in the next stitch. Skip next stitch. *Dc in each of the next 4 stitches. Bead stitch in the next stitch. Skip the next stitch*. Repeat from * to * around. Join with sl st to first dc. (10 bead stitches w/ dc between; total of 60 stitches)

Round 4: Ch 1. Sc in same stitch and in each around. Join with sl st to first sc. (60) On last pull through, drop the size 5 yarn and join size 4 yarn (2 strands together).

Round 5 (with size 4 yarn, 2 strands together): Ch 1. Sc in same stitch and in each stitch around. Join with sl st to first sc. (60)

Round 6: Ch 2. Dc in the same st. Dc in the next st. Bead stitch in the next stitch. Skip next stitch. *Dc in each of the next 4 stitches. Bead stitch in the next stitch. Skip the next stitch*. Repeat from * to * around. At the end of the round you will have 2 stitches remaining after the 10th bead and skip stitch repeat. Dc in each of those. Join with sl st to first dc. (10 bead stitches w/ dc between; total of 60 stitches)

Round 7: Ch 1. Sc in same stitch and in each around. Join with sl st to first sc. (60) On last pull through, drop the size 4 yarn and join size 5 yarn.

Skip the next stitch*. Repeat from * to * around. Join with sl st to first dc. (10 bead stitches w/ dc between; total of 60 stitches)

Round 10: Ch 1. Sc in same stitch and in each around. Join with sl st to first sc. (60) On last pull through, drop the size 5 yarn and join size 4 yarn (2 strands together).

Round 11 (with size 4 yarn, 2 strands together): Ch 1. Sc in same stitch and in each stitch around. Join with sl st to first sc. (60)

Round 12: Ch 2. Dc in the same stitch. Dc in the next stitch. Bead stitch in the next stitch. Skip next stitch. *Dc in the next stitch. Dc2tog in the next 2 stitches. Dc in the next stitch. Bead stitch in the next stitch. Skip next stitch.* Repeat from * to * around. After the 10th bead stitch (and skip next stitch) there will be two stitches remaining. Dc2tog in these two stitches. Join with sl st to the first dc. (10 bead stitches w/ dc between, total of 50 stitches).

Round 13: Ch 1. Sc in same stitch. Sc in each of the next 7 stitches. Sc2tog in the next 2 stitches. Sc in each of the next 8 stitches. Sc2tog in the next 2 stitches. Repeat from * to * around. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (45) On last pull through, finish off the size 4 yarn (since this is the last row you use it) and join size 5 yarn.

Round 14 (with size 5 yarn): Ch 1. Sc in same stitch. Sc in each of the next 6 stitches. Sc2tog in the next 2 stitches. Sc in each of the next 7 stitches. Sc2tog in the next 2 stitches. Repeat from * to * around. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (40)

Round 15: Ch 2. Dc2tog around the entire round. Join with a sl st to the first dc. (20)

Round 16: Ch 2. Dc2tog around the entire round. Join with a sl st to the first dc. (10)

Finish off and leave a long tail. Use a yarn needle to weave the tail in and out around the top stitches of the hat. Pull to cinch tight. Make a knot to secure and weave in your ends. Add a pom pom if desired.
