Crochet Bobble Ornament Pattern

Three crochet bobble ornaments on a silver platter. Each ornament has a lace ribbon. One is teal green, one is mustard and one is maroon.

This crochet bobble ornament has a little extra personality! The raised texture of the popcorn stitches, along with the velvet yarn, adds some charm and whimsy to the traditional ball ornament! It will really dress up your Christmas tree!

Add some beautiful ribbon to the top to really finish it off. They even look cute just sitting in a bowl on the table. This little design is a really fun one to play with!

Velvet Yarn for your Crochet Bobble Ornament

Of course, you could use any size 4 yarn for this ornament, but I think the velvet really takes it up a notch! It gives it a luxurious vibe and makes it ‘fancy’!

I used Yarn Bee Velvety Smooth Aran from Hobby Lobby. I especially loved the rich, deep color options. I used the ‘caramel’ and ‘aubergine’ colorways. They also have a sparkle version, called Velvety Smooth Sparkle. The green ornament in my photos is made with the ‘teal green’ color in the sparkle line.

Materials:

• 43 Yards Yarn Bee Velvety Smooth Aran weight 4 medium yarn (100% polyester, 3.5oz/100g, 161yds/147m)
US I/ 5.5 mm Crochet Hook (or size needed to obtain gauge)
Yarn Needle
Scissors
3.15” ball ornament

Gauge:

After round 4 your work should be approximately 4” across.

Finished Size:

Finished ornament fits a 3.15” ball ornament

Abbreviation Key:

(ch) chain
(sl st) slip stitch
(sk) skip
(sc) single crochet
(st) stitch
(sc2tog) single crochet two together
(dc) double crochet
Special Stitch: (pc) Popcorn Stitch
** Repeat instructions between asterisks as many times as directed

How to Crochet the Popcorn Stitch

Work 5 dc into the same stitch. Remove your hook from the current loop (completely remove hook from your work). Insert your hook through the first dc. Insert your hook through the dropped loop. Pull loop through the dc.

Pattern Notes:

I tend to crochet tightly. If you feel you are crocheting more loosely you can move to a smaller hook (or larger if you crochet even more tightly). Some people find they even need to go down two hook sizes to meet my gauge.

Chain at start of each round does not count as a stitch. Except when a round starts with a popcorn stitch. In that case, count it as part of the popcorn stitch.
