Michelle Beanie | Simple Crochet Beanie Pattern

This simple crochet beanie pattern only uses a few basic stitches and the bean stitch to create a beautiful, feminine design. The bean stitch clusters are a fun and easy way to add really eye-catching texture!

Dusty pink crochet beanie with pops of texture, lying on a white tile background. The edge of a basket and some leaves can be seen in the corner.

This particular design looks especially lovely in a solid color yarn. Simplifying with one color really lets the texture of the piece stand out. So, find a really lovely solid color yarn in your favorite hue and have fun!

Another fun take would be to try using a different color yarn for just the bean stitch clusters. I haven’t tried it yet, but if you are adventurous and go for it, please let me know how it turns out!

2022 Holiday Stashdown Crochet Along

This pattern is a part of the 2022 Holiday Stashdown Crochet Along! Every Monday and Thursday from October 3 through December 15, 2022, the hosts share a free crochet pattern by a different designer. This week is my turn! Each pattern will be a one-skein project, or a stashbuster/scrappy project, so you can work from your own existing yarn stash to make a great winter holiday gift, decoration, or wrap.

You can find all the details of the Crochet Along, as well as links to all the patterns HERE on the Crochet Along Home Page!

The Matching Simple Crochet Scarf

Pink crochet scarf laying in a disheveled fashion on a shite tile back ground.

I created this simple crochet beanie pattern specifically to match the Michelle Scarf Pattern!

I love a matching set and try to create one whenever I can. Not only is a matching set personally fun, but it also makes a great gift or combo to sell at a craft fair!

The construction of the beanie was a little different than the scarf. The scarf works in back and forth rows, while the beanie needed to be worked in the round. Thankfully, this was not too hard to work out and the set looks great!

The Yarn For This Pattern

Of course, since I was creating a matching set, I used Yarn Bee Yarn ID just like I did with the scarf. It has a soft bounce that I really like for a raised stitch like the bean stitch. It gives it wonderful definition, while also being very soft and squishy!

No matter what yarn you choose to use, I would suggest a yarn that has good density and “bounce.” One that is good at accentuating stitch definition. If you choose a yarn that is more sleek and silky will probably lay a little more flat.

Materials:

Gauge:

4” x 4” swatch of double crochet stitches = 7 ½” rows x 11 ½ stitches

Sizing:

Adult small with slouchy fit: 18” circumference x 8” tall

Stitches Used:

(ch) chain
(sl st) slip stitch
(sc) single crochet
(scblo) single crochet back loop only
(hdc) half double crochet
(dc) double crochet
(dc2tog) double crochet 2 together
Special stitch: Bean Stitch

How to Crochet the Bean Stitch:

Insert hook. Yo and pull through the stitch. Yo. Insert hook in the same stitch. Yo and pull up a loop. You will have 4 loops on your hook. Yo. Insert hook in the same stitch. Yo and pull up a loop. You will have 6 loops on your hook. Yo and pull through all 6 loops on your hook. Chain 1 to finish off the stitch.

Pattern Notes:

Beginning chain of each row does not count as a stitch.

I tend to crochet tightly. Some people find they even need to go down two hook sizes to meet my gauge.

This beanie has a slouchy fit.

There will be a “prettier” or “right” side to the project, as the bean stitches pop out more on one side than the other. The prettier side is the “wrong” side (back of bean stitches), so you will turn the project inside out at the end.

PATTERN

Brim:

Chain 7.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd chain from hook and in each chain across. (6)

Row 2: Ch 1. Turn. Scblo in the same stitch and in each of the next 4 stitches. Sc in the last stitch. (6)

Rows 3 – 60: Repeat row 2 until roughly 17-18 inches and a multiple of 6. (60).

At this point my band was 17” long. I usually aim for 18” for an adult small, but if I added an additional 6 stitches to make it a multiple of 6 it would be larger than I wanted. To resize larger or smaller, add or remove a multiple of 6.

Sc the two short ends together. Do not finish off. Do not turn inside out. We will do that at end because the back side of the bean stitches look the best.

Body:

Round 1: Ch 1. Sc around the top of the band, placing one sc in the end of each row. Join with a sl st to the first sc of the round (60).

Round 2: Ch 2. Skip the same stitch. Place 3 bean stitches in the next stitch. Skip the next stitch. Dc in each of the next 3 stitches. *Skip the next stitch. Place 3 bean stitches in the next stitch. Skip the next stitch. Dc in each of the next 3 stitches.* Repeat from * to * around. Join with a sl st to the eye of the first bean stitch of the round. (60)

Round 3: Ch 1. Hdc in the same bean stitch eye. Sc in the eye of the next bean stitch. Hdc in eye of the next bean stitch. Dc in each of the next 3 dc. *Hdc in the eye of the bean stitch. Sc in the eye of the next bean stitch. Hdc in the eye of the next bean stitch. Dc in each of the next 3 dc.* Repeat from * to * around. Join with a sl st to hdc at the beginning of the round. (60)

Round 4: Ch 2. Dc in same stitch and in each of the next 2 stitches. Skip the next stitch. Place 3 bean stitches in the next stitch. Skip the next stitch. *Dc in each of the next 3 stitches. Skip the next stitch. Place 3 bean stitches in the next stitch. Skip the next stitch.* Repeat from * to * around. Join with a sl st to first dc of the round. (60)

Round 5: Ch 2. Dc in same stitch and in each of the next 2 stitches. Hdc in the eye of the bean stitch. Sc in the eye of the next bean stitch. Hdc in the eye of the next bean stitch. *Dc in each of the next 3 stitches. Hdc in the eye of the bean stitch. Sc in the eye of the next bean stitch. Hdc in the eye of the next bean stitch.* Repeat from * to * around. Join with a sl st to the first dc of the round. (60)

Rounds 6 – 9: Repeat rounds 2 – 5.

Rounds 10 – 12: Repeat rounds 2 – 4.

Note: at this point my hat was approximately 7 inches tall. Now we will decrease for several rows before cinching shut.

Round 13: Ch 2. Dc in the same stitch. Dc2tog. Hdc in the eye of the bean stitch. Sc in the eye of the next bean stitch. Hdc in the eye of the next bean stitch. *Dc in the next stitch. Dc2tog. Hdc in the eye of the bean stitch. Sc in the eye of the next bean stitch. Hdc in the eye of the next bean stitch.* Repeat from * to * around. Join with a sl st to the first dc of the round. (50)

Round 14: Ch 2. Dc in the same stitch and in each of the next 2 stitches. Dc2tog. *Dc in each of the next 3 stitches. Dc2tog.* Repeat from * to * around. Join with a sl st to the first dc of the round. (40)

Round 15: Ch 2. Dc in the same stitch. Dc in the next stitch. Dc2tog. *Dc in each of the next 2 stitches. Dc2tog.* Repeat from * to * around. Join with a sl st to the first dc of the round. (30)

At this point my hat was 8 ½ “ tall.

Finish off. Leave a long tail. Use a yarn needle to weave the tail in and out along the top row of the hat. Pull the tail to cinch shut. Tie a knot to secure and weave in your ends.

Turn the hat inside out so that the puffier side of the bean stitches faces out.

Optional: Add a pom pom.
